I made a COMSOL simulation of our wafer (75 mm with flats, 1 mm thick) with a 1 micron thick coating (Tantala), and computed the dilution factor (E_coating / E_total). The result is shown in the plot below:

The dilution factor is slighly mode dependent, around a value of 5.7e-3.
The Q we measured on the latest two annealed wafers are in the range of 5e6 - 10e6 for the good modes, meaning that the total loss angle (subtrate, surface and edge combined) is 1e-7 - 2e-7.
Assuming an undoped tantala coating with loss angle of 4e-4 (http://authors.library.caltech.edu/55765/2/1501.06371.pdf), the disk loss angle after coating will be 2.2e-6, a factor 5 to 10 higher than our uncoated and annealed wafers.
So we can use the wafers as they are for our measurements.

This morning I found the cymac and the workstation rebooted, so I suspected a power cut in the last days. However, the function generator and the power supply for the QPD were off. So somebody must have turned them off.

Removed the peak meter lock from the model, since it's not used
Added and EPICS binary bit to control the autocenter, added corresponding buttons to the MEDM screen.
Now the GUI stops the autocentering when acquiring the reference spectrum.
The auto_excite.py also stops the autocentering 35 seconds before the excitation and until 35 second after the excitation, to provide for two reference quiet periods.

I looked into a couple of turbo pump switch on periods, and in both cases when the pump speed hits 58 Hz, a resonance is excited. I'm not sure what's resonating.
Today I let the roughing pump reduce the pressure to a level lower than usual, and this seems to mitigate the effect. The disk wasn't shaking as much as it did in previous pump-downs.

This morning I installed temporarily a second QPD to monitor the input beam. The goal was to understand where the vibrations at frequencies below 2kHz couple from. As shown in the photo, the second QPD was close to the first one.

The signals in the two QPDs were quite different, and the coherence between them wasn't great. So I concluded that the main coupling path is not through input beam of QPD vibration, but more likely real motion of the disk.
 
I removed the additional QPD and restored the setup to its nominal configuration. The readout infrastructure is still in the model. |

Yesterday we assembled the lase polishing system. The Co2 laser power can be controlled using a waveplate, so we can turn on the laser at maximum power and let it stabilize, before actually turning up the power sent to the disk.
The beam is focused with a 10" focal length lens, and sent to the disk edge, poiting slightly upward to avoid hitting any other part of the disk.
The disk is moved with a combination of a linear and rotation stage, controlled with a MATLAB script. We tuned the translation and rotation speed so that the edge always moves at about 0.5 mm/s. Some refinement of the movimentation procedure will follow.
We tried the setup with one of the damaged samples, and the results are quite good.

We improved the control software of the laser polishing system: now the rotation speed is large when the laser is missing the disk because of the flats.
We used S1600479 as a test. This substrate was marked as damaged and had a clear chip. It went thoruhg two different polishing runs
- CO2 power ~19.5 W, speed 0.5 mm/s
- CO2 power ~18.5 W, speed 0.25 mm/s
The second run was probably too slow, and we can see some kind of traces left on the main surface close to the edges
We then laser polished a good subtrate (S1600439) which was already measured before (137) and after annealing (144), with good Q values. This is a substrate from the first batch we received from Mark Optics. The polishing was done at ~ 18W and 0.5 mm/s.

The plot below shows that the Q values of S1600439 improved a lot after the CO2 laser polishing. About 15 modes have Q above 10e6. The first mode at 1kHz has a Q of 37e6, the highest ever measured so far!

Here's a comparison of the Q values of this sample before annealing, after annealing and after CO2 polishing.

For reference, this sample has not been CO2 polished, but it has been annealed and measured. It has quite low Q values. Here are some images of the edges. The first two are taken with light from above. In the second one there some clear red residual, which is also visible as a coloration with the naked eye. The microroughness and some larger defect are well visible.
 
The following images instead are taken with light from below. The red residual is even more evident, and some traces probably due to the machining are clearly visible.

This sample has been laser polished with a double pass (first at 0.5 mm/s, second at 0.25 mm/s). The first two images are taken with light from above: they are not very clear because of the specular reflection of the lamps. This already indicates that the surface is much smoother. Some defects (bubbles?) are visible close to the main surfaces.
 
The surface quality is more apparent in the following pictures, taken with light from below. The second one is taken where there is a chip in the main surface, and indeed one can see the shading due to the light distortion iduced by the chip. Also a cluster of "bubbles" is clearly visible there.

This was our first polishing test. It is interesting because the laser tripped during the procedure, so we have a neat transition from the original surface to the polished one. First image taken with light from above, second with light from below
