Daily scans show small improvement in large amu 32 Oxygen and large amu 16, 17 and 18 H20 water peaks.
Argon calibration valve is leaking on our Ar cylinder and it is constant.
The good news is that there are no fragmented hydrocarbons in the spectrum.
The Maglev is soaked with water. It was seating in the 40m for 4 years with viton o-ring seals
However I can not explan the large oxygen peak, either Rai Weiss can not.

The Cryo needs to be regenerated next. It has been pumping for 36 days since last regenerated.
This has to be done periodically, so the Cryo's 14 K cold head is not insulated by by ice of all things pumped away from the IFO |

The Cryopump's VC1 valve to IFO was closed yesterday.
The compressor Helium pressure was 235 PSI. The cold head temp on H2 vapor pressure gauge was reading ~14 Kelvin,
The compressor and piston driver were turned off to let cold head warm up to room temp.
The flow path from Cryo to TP3 were checked to insure that only VC2 and V5 would be open for pumping.
VC2 valve was opened to TP3 through V5
Now as the Cryo was warming up while TP3 drag turbo pump was pumping away the accumulated ice, that was melting and vaporizing.
This is shown on one day the plot below.
To check outgassing rate of the Cryo pump after one day of pumping V5 was closed for 20 minutes.
The accumulation was 1.3 mTorr in 20 min
This means the Cryo is clean, it is ready to be started up in the future.
VC2 was closed to seal this condition.
The flow path between VC2, VM3, V7, V6 , VA6 and manual needle valve would be pumped for one day through V5 to TP3 to clean up |

We tested gate valve V1 interlock by :
1, decelerated rotation by brake from maglev controller unit.
2, turned maglev controller off from controller unit.
3, unpluged 220VAC plug from wall socket
None of the above action triggered V1 to close. This needs to be corrected in the future.
The MEDM monitor screen of maglev indicated the correct condition changes.

I set the MC back to its good alignment (June 21st) using this procedure. The trend of the OSEM values over the last 40 days and 40 nights is attached.
Then I aligned the periscope to that beam. This took some serious periscope knob action. Without WFS, the transmission went to 2.7 V and the reflection down to 0.6V.
Then I re-aligned the MC_REFL path as usual. The beam was far enough off that I had to also re-align onto the MC LSC PD as well as the MC REFL camera (~2 beam radii).
Beams are now close to their historical positions on Faraday and MC2. I then restored the PZT sliders to their April snapshot and the X-arm locked.
Steve - please recenter the iris which is on the periscope. It has been way off for a long time.
So it looks OK now. The main point here is that we can trust the MC OSEMs.
Afterwards I rebooted c1susvme1 and c1susvme2 because they were skewed.

I'm impressed by Rana's simple way to align the MC. IFO arms are locked or flashing. 20 days trend attached.

The 40m-IFO vacuum envelope doors are sealed with dual viton O-rings and they are pumped through the annulos lines.
This allows easy access into the chambers. The compression of the o-rings are controlled by the o-ring grooves.
The OOC (output optic chamber)'s west side door has no such groove and it is sealed by just one single O-ring.
We have to protect this O-ring from total compression by 3 shims as shown below.
There were control shims in place before and they disappeared.
Let's remember that these shims are essential to keep our vacuum system in good condition.

IFO pressure was 2.3 mTorr this morning,
The Maglev's foreline valve V4 was closed so P2 rose to 4 Torr. The Maglev was running fine with V1 open.
This is a good example for V1 to be closed by interlock, because at 4 Torr foreline pressure the compression ratio for hydrocarbones goes down.
V4 was closed by interlock when TP2 lost it's drypump. The drypump's AC plug was lose.

The swapped in 307 convectron gauge controller is very likely to have the RS232 connection wired differently from the old one.
PRP gauge has now the same error message as the PTP1: "no comm" I would look at RS232 wiring of the PRP gauge on the broken
controller and adapt the swapped in one to communicate. The PRP was reading 620 Torr before the swap. |

Ben came over this week and measured the quiescent power consumption. The low power draw level was 11.9 A and during the reboot its 12.2 A. He measured this by ??? (Rob inserts method here).
So what we want is a 120 V * 12.2 A ~ 1.4 kVA UPS with ~30-50% margin. We look for this on the APC-UPS site:
On Monday, we will order the SUA2200 from APC. It should last for ~25 minutes during an outage. Its $1300. The next step down is $200 cheaper and gives 10 minutes less uptime.

The new APC Smart -UPS 2200VA is now running at the vacuum rack. There are 2 load monitoring leds on out of 5
Maglev, dry pumps and roughing pumps are not using UPS.
The switch over went smoothly with Yoichi's help.
First we closed all vacuum valves and stopped the two small turbos.
Than turned power off to instruments in the vac-rack and VME: c1vac1 & c1vac2
Maglev was left running.
Now we moved the AC plugs from the wall receptacles over to the back of the UPS and powered them up.
Varian turbos were restarted and vacuum valves were restored in order to reach vacuum normal condition.

Linux 3 desk top computer is out of order at the pump spool. We should replace it.

The schematic doesn't show it, but I am guessing that the T_SENSE inputs are connected to the AD590 chips, and that 4 of these are attached somehow to the RefCav can. IF this is true, I don't understand why there are input resistors on the LT1125 of U1; the AD590 is supposed to be a current source ?
Peter King is supposed to be coming over to work on this today so whoever spots him should force/cajole/entice him to elog what he's done. Film him if necessary.
I also think R1-8 should be swapped into metal film resistors for stability. The datasheet says that it puts out 1 uA/K, so the opamps put out 10 mV/K.
J8 and JP1 should be shorted to disable both the tidal and VME control input. Both are unused and a potential source of drift.

The LT 1021-7 reference chip will arrive tomorrow morning. This modification should be completed by noon.

It turned out that half an hour was too long. In less than that the reference cavity temperature passed the critical point when the temperature controller (located just below the ref cav power supply in the same rack) disables the input power to the reference cavity power supply.
The controller's display in the front shows two numbers. The first goes with the temperature of the reference cavity; the second is a threshold set for the first number. The power supply gets enabled only when the first number comes under the threshold value.
Now the cavity is cooling down and it will take about another hour for its temperature to be low enough and for the heater power supply to be powered.

I was told yesterday, that on Friday the construction people accidentally ripped out one of the 40m soil ground.....AND HOW MANY MORE ARE THERE? nobody knows.
It was ~8 ft long and 0.5" diameter buried in the ground. There is no drawing found to identify this exact building ground. They promised to replace this on Wednesday with a 10 ft long and 0.75" diameter.
The the wall will be resealed where the conduit enters the north west corner of the IFO room 104
There should be no concern about safety because the 40m building main ground is connected to the CES Mezzanine step-down transformer. |

Rob found puddles of water very close to the chiller during lunch time. We raised the unit and took the side cover off. All surfaces were dry and the water level in the tub normal.
Later on we discovered that one of the Vons distilled water bottle was leaking. Jenne and I checked for excess amount of condensing water droplets inside the MOPA box.
On the bare,not insulated tubing and valve are loaded with droplets of water. Relative humidity is 44% at 24 C and HEPA filter speed set to 80 V in the enclosure.

Pointing stability of 4 days. Initial pointing does not go through suspended optics. It is launched right after the Piezo Jena steering mirrors in the BS chamber.
IP-ANG on epics screen is C1:ASC-IBQPD_X and Y in dataviewer were recentered. This beam is clipping a bit in ETMX chamber pick off mirror.
IP-POS pick off is in the BS chamber and it's qpd on the BS_ISCT This beam is also clipping just a little bit. This is easy to fix. We'll have to remove an iris from the BS optical levers table.

Pump down #66 is 435 days old. RGA scan is normal. New maglev is fine. New UPS is in place but not hooked up to communicate.
V1 has bare minimum interlock. Pirani vacuum gauges PTP1 and PRP do not communicate with readout system.
There is no emergency dial out in case of vacuum loss. Our existing vacuum dedicated desk top computer is dead.
New cold cathodes, Pirani gauges and gauge controller should be added.
In general: vacuum system needs an upgrade !

Atm2 : activity next door, diesel Backhoe and diesel concrete cutter are running
Atm3: CES exhaust fans output is pick up by 40M-Annex-North AC unit intake. The 40m office room has some diesel smell...........see # 2377 |
