I found this lab really cool, the people working here really cool as well, and this e-log....

During the last two days some things related to weather station have been improved.
1) Startup file for the computer (processor) 'c1pem1' was changed so that now 'c1pem1' can be rebooted from "Linux1". Computer 'c1pem1' is responsible for communicating data between 'Weather Monitor' and control UNIX machines. Before April 1st it was impossible to reboot the computer 'c1pem1'. Now 'c1pem1' runs without difficulties.
2) It was determined that some ethernet cables of category "cat 5" were bad. I replaced one short cat 5 cable between 'c1pem1' and 'network-switch board' in the neighboring computer rack, and I still need to replace the internet ending of another long (~20 meters) cat 5 cable after Alex Ivanov will bring the tool for that.
3) 'Weather monitor' and 'WeatherLink' are temporarily moved away from their "nested" positions on the north wall, and they are now in the proximity of processor 'c1pem1'. Thus the signal about "Inside Temperature" goes into 'c1pem1' computer without any additional ethernet cables, and "inside temperature" is correctly displayed on the "Checklist" adl. MEDM screen on the control UNIX machines. The cable with a signal from the roof sensors (which might be dead due their 7-year age) is temporarily disconnected from the 'Weather Monitor'.
Result: 'Weather Monitor' and computer (processsor) 'c1pem1' are alive, they communicate reasonable "Inside Temperature" to the control UNIX-machines.
The fate of the outside sensors is currently unknown, I plan to go to the roof together with Mr. Steve Vass tomorrow and try to determine what should be done with them.
I am also writing (right now) a wiki-40 page which explains what is the "Weather Station" and what is its status. |

After today's trip to the roof of our building the weather station seems to be completely resurrected!
We went to the roof together with Steve Vass, and we discovered that:
(1) Sensors of wind speed, wind direction and the bowl that measures the amount of precipitation do not have any visible defects, so there is no problem with all those sensors even after being outside for seven years.
(2) We discovered that there are cable junctions located on the roof, and those junctions were located close to the rim (edge) of the roof, before the cables go inside of 40-meter lab room. The taping in the place of the junction was not good due to the age, and the connections between the cables were disrupted (cable endings were out of the connectors). Therefore, no signal from the roof sensors could be transferred to the 'Weather Monitor'. It was not wise from the person who installed the weather station to leave the fragile cable connections outside, on the roof, because the length of the cables allowed to locate those three connectors inside of the building.

(3) After the cables were plugged into the connectors, these cable junctions were gently pulled into the inside of the 40-meter interferometer room. These cable junctions should not be located outside of the building!
Immediately after all the above-mentioned steps, the reasonable indications of outside temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed and direction appeared on the 'Weather Monitor'.
In order to see if there is any problem of communication between the 'Weather Monitor' and UNIX control computers through 'c1pem1', I rolled out two brand new black cat-5 ethernet cables on the floor of the interferometer room (they are on the floor temporarily, the ethernet cable will go from the floor into the ceiling cable tray eventually), connected the two cables together through freshly purchased from Caltech bookstore cable connectors, and thus connected the 'Weather Monitor' to the processor 'c1pem1'.
Result: Now we can see reasonable indications of outside temperature, pressure, amount of precipitation, wind speed and direction on the EPICS screen! Moreover, these indications are changing with time.
As a reminder for everyone: standard atmospheric pressure is about 101kPa, so the indications of pressure as 99900Pa is quite reasonable.
One thing is not clear for me yet: wind speed on the 'Weather Monitor' is fluctuating between 2 and 4 mph, while MEDM EPICS-screen values are fluctuation in the range between 0 and 3mph.

Hi, this is Koji from Japan.
I am afraid that this is a poisonous spider, Latrodectus hasseltii.
In Japanese word "Seaka-goke-gumo" (red-backed widow spider)
I am not an expert of insects, but this type of spider is getting famous in Japan as they were accidentally imported from South-West asia and Austraria to Japan in recent years, and they settled in certain city areas.
It is said that its neurotoxic venom causes unpleasant results such as shock, pain, and inflammation, even it is not too strong to kill human.
Be careful.

The PSL Room Temperature was alarming because it had gone above 23 C. This set off an unfortunate chain of events:
We found that the PSL HEPA was set low (20%). This is a fine setting for when no one is working in there but it
does raise the temperature since there are heat sources inside the blue box.
We tried to change the office area temperature to compensate and also the westmost sensor inside the lab area by 2 deg F.
The office area one was problematic - there was so much dust in it that the gas valve nipple was clogged. So we've
now blown it all clean with a compressed air can. We're now tuning the calibration screw to make our new
digital sensor agree with the setpoint on the controller.
Expect wild temperature swings of the office area for a couple days while Alberto and I tune the servo. |

This morning Bob found 92F in the office area and in the control room of the lab. He turned down the thermostat and when I got in at about 9 I found 65. After a few hours of adjustment of the thermostat's calibration, I could stabilize the room temperature to about 72F. I also turned down the thermostats inside the lab of a couple of degrees F. |

They are burning woods to warm themselves. So smoky smell is floating around in the campus
and naturally the particle count is going up.
Actually at first I thought some building is on fire and called the security. Then they found
that it is the people on Colorado.
Now C1:PEM-count_half is 28400 and it is still climbing up. |

Looks like Chris Wipf's fix of using fclose worked for the NDS client.
The attached plot shows the minute trend RMS - we should put the calibration for these into the .m file
so that the EPICS values are in something useful like microns or microns/sec.
I also now see why Nodus seems really slow with the elog sometimes. When we load a page with an attached
PDF, it runs 'gs' to try to generate the PNG preview. Because its on Solaris it often fails because it
can't find some font. We should probably disable the preview or fix the font issue. |

Rana suggested using OSEM sensing voltages as guide lines to look seismic activity.
As you see todays drilling and tumping activity was nothing compared to the EQ of mag 5 and 4
Optic level servos are turned back on.
What Steve means is that there is some drilling going on in the CES shop to accomodate the new water flume group. We want to
make sure that the mirrors don't move enough to break the magnets. On the dataviewer we should look to make sure that the
sensor channels stay between 0-2 V. -Rana

Restarted the seisBLRMS.m on mafalda (running a term on op540m). Don't know why it stopped - the
terminal had a 'disabled by EPICS' message even though the EPICS enable button was enabled.
I also changed the delay from 4 to 2 minutes. So now it is calculating a 64 s PSD starting from 2 minutes ago. We had
put it back to 4 minutes long ago since the framebuilder was acting slow, but maybe it will work now since its using
the NDS1 protocol instead of direct frame reading. If it starts not finding data, please kill the seisBLRMS and restart
it with a 3 minute delay. |

Mafalda's ethernet cable had fallen out of the connector on the hub-side. We reconnected it and rebooted mafalda and restarted seisBLRMS.
Mafalda didn't mount /cvs/cds on start up for some reason. I mounted it using 'sudo mount linux1:/home/cds /cvs/cds' and it took at least
30 seconds, so maybe there's a timeout issue. Seems OK now. |

I have increased the temperature setpoint in the office area by ~0.75 deg F. Figure attached. Also a few days ago I increased the setpoint of the AC in the control room. Looks like the Laser is able to handle the changes in office area temperature so far, but lets see how it fares over the weekend. |

This is a 7-day minute trend. There's no obvious effect in any of the channels looking back 2 days.
Seems like the laser chiller fix has made the laser much more immune to the office area temperature. |

I turned the AC back on because the temperature of the room was going up so also that of the laser chiller. |
I reinstalled the blue-flap technology on the AC, because the MOPA power was dropping like a rock. A light-ish rock since it wasn't going down too fast, but the alarms started going a little while ago because PMC trans was too low, because the power was getting a little low. The laser water chiller is reading 21.97C, which is higher than it normally does/did before the AC shenanigans (It usually reads 20.00C).
Attached is a look-back of 18 hours, during which you can see in the AMPMON the time that Rana removed the blue flap around 2pm yesterday and the AMPMON changes a little bit, but not drastically, the time around 11pm when the AC was turned off, and AMPMON goes down pretty fast, and about 12:30am, when Alberto turned the AC back on, and AMPMON starts to recover. I think that the AMPMON starts to go down again in the morning because it's been crazy hot here in Pasadena, so the room might be getting warmer, especially with the laser chiller-chiller not actively chilling the laser chiller (by not being pointed at the water chiller), so the water isn't getting as cold, and the HTEMP started to go up.
In the last few minutes of having put the blue flap back on the AC, the laser chiller is already reading a lower temperature, and the AMPMON is starting to recover. |

I spent part of the afternoon cleaning up the area next to the Mode Cleaner where we keep all of our RF stuff: Attenuators, BNC/SMA/LEMO adapters, Mini-Circuits items, and all sorts of other things which are useful while looking at our electronics/RF stuff.
We got another set of "Lyon" drawers, which aided in the organization process....Bob ordered 2, so we now have a 'spare' drawer set if anyone can think of something else to organize (unless this was premeditated for optics or something else?).
As you can see in the picture, (1) it's no longer a total disaster over there, and (2) some of the drawers have sub-divisions to make it faster and easier to find what you're looking for. Please help out by putting things away in their proper place, and adding more labels or dividers to the drawers if there's something else which needs a 'spot'. |

Awesome.
I propose that anyone who tries to do this kind of thoroughgoing cleaning should make an e-mail to call everyone available to join just for some hours
because every member has a responsibility to keep the lab organized.
And we have the list of things to do: Electronics (now it is halfway) / Cables / Optics / Screws / Tools ...

I laid down the floor a BNC cable from the Y End table to the BNC Chamber. The cable runs next to the east wall.
I'm leaving the cable because it can turn useful in the future.
I'm tying the end of the cable to a big threaded steel rod on the side of the BS chamber.

We have thousands of miles of BNC cables in the lab but we still don't find one when we need it. I decided to solve the problem.
This morning I tried to tidy up the several cable rack the we have in the lab.
i tried to dedicate each rack to a speecific type of cables: special cables, hand made cables, BNCs, LEMOs, etc.
In particular I tryed to concentrate BNC cable of several lengths on the rack near by the ITMX chamber.
People are invited to preserve the organization.

This would be a good trial once you put the label "BNC only" on the wall.

Yesterday Rana and I needed some room on the white board in the Control Room. We had to erase some of the stuff present on the board despite the bif warning "Do Not Erase".
This is how it looked like before erasing.

The 40m produces a large amount of paper and cardboard waste. It would be worth it if we disposed those kind of garbages for recycling.
I set up two new garbage bins in the lab: one in the control rooms that adds up to the can/bottle recycling bin, and one other one in the office area, next to the printer for general paper disposal.
People in the lab are strongly invited to make use of the two new garbage bins and recycle their paper and cardboard waste.
Boxes can be larger than the garbage bin, so I'd recommend people to crash them before throwing them into the bin.

Diesel fumes are pumped away from control room AC intakes with the help of newly installed reflector boxes on the CES wall fans.........see # 2272 |

I made a short stop at the 40m on Sunday night and found that hundreds ants are in the coffee maker.
I removed ants around the sink and washed the coffee maker.
It looked the ants were everywhere in the lab tonight. They seemed to prefer warm places like in the coffee maker and below the coffee mill.
So, I recommend that Steve should confirm there is no ants in the coffee maker again before the first coffee of the week is made.
Othewise they will add some more acidity to your cup.

We still had some ants visiting the sink area this morning. These ants seem to be addicted to our our Peet's coffe
Spectracide: Bug Stop insect killer was sprayed. Please wash your eating dishes well ! and keep area clean.

One of the electronics benches is currently occupied by the STACIS equipment.
We need that table If no one is working on the STACIS anymore, it should be removed from there. |

we hung two new WALL cable racks. One is on the pillar next to the Sp table, the other is next to the PSL computer rack.
To do that we had to drill holes in the wall since the simple screws weren't strong enough to keep them up.
One of the racks, the yellow, is dedicated to 4-pin lemos and other thick cables.

awesome - I have ordered 5 blue racks so that we can hang power cables. The fat BLUE ones are for fat cables and the orange ones for the coax cables. |

In the lab there are lots of old posters with outdated autocad drawings, or printouts with schematics of old electronics hanging on the walls.
Can we get rid of those and start giving the lab a fresh and modern look? |

Rana noticed that recently the temperature inside the lab has been a little bit too high. That might be causing some 'unease' to the computers with the result of making them crash more often.
Today I lowered the temperature of the three thermostats that we have inside the lab by one degree:
Y arm thermostat: from 71 to 70 F
X arm thermostat: from 70 to 69 F
Aisle thermostat: from 72 to 71 F.
For the next hours I'll be paying attention to the temperature inside the lab to make sure that it doesn't go out of control and that the environment gets too cold. |
