Steve | Update | PEM | Gur interface box cable |
Ara! Onara suru tsu-mori datta keh-do, un-chi ga de-chatta...
Quote: |
Quote: |
As reported previously, the transfer functions of the channels look fine. (i.e. All channels almost identical.)
I checked the chain from the unit input to the DAQ BNC connectors. They were all OK.
Today I have been checking the signals on the unit with the long DB37 cables connected.
I could not see anything on the Gur2 channels on the board. I looked at the DB37 for Gur2 and felt something is wrong.
I opened the housing of the cable and realized that all the pins are not fully inserted.
The wires were crimped improperly and prevents them to be fully inserted.
=> We need to redo the crimping to insert them.
=> We need to check the other side too.
|
I'm making a new long cable. Both connector ends of this X arm long cable were terrible. It was removed from the cable tray yesterday.
The Y arm Guralp is running fine. The interface box is open in front of 1X1 on a cart and it is alive! Please be aware of it !
|
The new cable was made this way:
Pins were located with ohm meter for locations and both ends were cut off.The Belden 1424A cable than was soldered to DB37 and Guralp circular connector " IKPT06F16-26S-ND "
This cable will connect the ADC interface box CCD# DO 60506 to Guralp seismometer at the sout end.
The Guralp's each 3 axies will be connected through a twisted pair to the differential input op amp
Gur ouput vertical axis + - on circular connector A, B to DB37 pin 1 &20
Gur output N/S axis + - on circular connector C, D to DB37 pin 2 & 21
Gur output E/W axis + - on circular connector E, F to DB37 pin 3 & 22
Power +12 VDC from DB37 pin 29 to Gur circular connector pin c (lower case)
Power -12 VDC from DB37 pin 24 to Gur circular connector pin M Note: this connection was absent at the first test of this cable!
Ground from DB37 pin 10 to Gur circular connector pin b (lower case)
Summery: I may destored the opamp at the Guralp A at the south end.

Steve | Update | PEM | Gurs swapped |
Quote: |
To help find out if Steve really melted the inside of our precious seismometer, lets hook it up using the handheld seismo wand and see if it produces volts when we shake the ground.
Also, please stop using names like GurA or Gur1 or GurSuzy. We have GurX and GurY because they are at those ends. Anything else is confusing.
|
I moved Gur A from ETMX to ETMY . Gur B at ETMY was disconnected and its cable connected to Gur A
It seems that Gur A is alive. I will stop using A and B names after we stop swapping components. |

Steve | Update | LSC | IR beatnote confusion..... |
Quote: |
I was thinking that the "FOSC" product line (which is called a "coupler" instead of a "splitter/combiner") was what we wanted.
Koji brought to my attention that the 90/10 splitters we already have are of this line. So, I rigged a few up to shine a hopefully beating pair of fields on the fiber coupled thorlabs PD.
I was able to get ~80uW each of PSL and AUX X light on the PD, which produced a -10dBm beatnote! Thus, I think these FOSC splitters are indeed what we want.
I then threw this IR beatnote at our ALS signal chain. The beatnote was too big to throw through our ~+27dB RF amps, so I just sent the -10dBm over to the LSC rack.
The IR beat spectrum is somwhat noisier from 10-100Hz, but, more interesting, is that the sub-4Hz noise is identical in the two beats, and very coherent. This excludes ALS noise arising from anything happening in the green beat optics on the PSL table.
Obviously, the high frequency noise is largely the same and coherent too, but also coherent with the AUX X PDH control signal, so it is understood.

Steve | Update | SUS | wire standoffs |
Our last effort to change the existing Al-6061 wire standoffs was at April 2012
We requested sapphire and/or ruby materials with smaller R at the bottom of the groove. Groove polishing was asked for.
Insaco Inc. quote 84740 as " best effort " NO POLISHING. The groove cut to be with eximer laser.
Jeff Lewis as 9-12-2012: the LIGO sapphire prisms grooves were NOT POLISHED but Resonatics used the corner of a rasor blade to scrape off the
ablated material wich was redeposited in and around the grooves.

Steve | Update | VAC | cold cathode is flaky |
The IFO pressure is estimated ~1E-6 Torr with modified Vac normal valve configuration.
CC4 is in a jumping mode between 2e-5 and 1e-6 Torr
Pressure based interlock kicks in to close VM1 at 2e-5 Torr to protect the RGA.
I did open VM1 repeatedly in the last few mornings but as cc4 jumps VM1 closes.
As VM1 closed to RGA scans are not seeing the IFO. I will look at some scans on Monday.
Mean while I opened VM2 to lower the pressure for the RGA. This change will be read by "Current Status: Undefined State"
So do not panic, the IFO pressure is normal.
I need someone's help to raise the interlock threshold to 5e-5 Torr
I'm buying a new cold cathode gauge on Monday.
note: cc1 is out of order!
just read P1 the pressure is < 7e-4 Torr This gauge is very reliable and it is at the low end of it's range.

Steve | Update | VAC | after running out of N2 |
Quote: |
[ericq, Gautam, Steve]
Following roughly the same procedure as ELOG 11354, c1vac1 and c1vac2 were rebooted. The symptoms were identical to the situation in that ELOG; c1vac1 could be pinged and telneted to, but c1vac2 was totally unresponsive.
The only change in the linked procedure was that we did not shut down the maglev. Since I unwittingly had it running for days without V4 open while Steve was away, we now know that it can handle shorter periods of time than that...
Upon reboot, many channels were readable again, unfortunately the channels for TP2 and TP3 are still blank. We were able to return to "Vacuum normal state," but because of unknowned communication problems with VM1's interlock, we can't open VM1 for the RGA. Instead we opened VM2 to expose the RGA to the main IFO volumn, but this isn't part of the "Normal" state definite, so things currently read "Undefined state".
|
Precondition:
1, Pressure gauges had no communication ( NO COMM ) with c1vac2
2, Lost N2 supply on Oct 9 This triggered a normal all valve closed condition. At this point you replace N2 cylinders and manually swich valves to recreate VAC NORMAL configuration in the correct sequential order.
The very last thing you do is open V1 gate valve.
a, check TP2 that is the forepump of the Maglev. Foreline pressure to drypump ~ 10- 100 mTorr, rotation speed 50 Krpm
b, open V4 if P2 <1Torr
c, check Maglev rotating at 560 Hz
d, open V1 if P1 <500 mTorr
e, check TP3 foreline, rotation speed and open V5 if P3 <1 Torr with VA6 closed
f, open VA6 if PAN <1 Torr
g, open annulos valves one by one , like VASE if PASE <1 Torr and so on...........Now the Current State: should read Vac Normal
3, Maglev run for 7 days with V4 closed. This encreased its foreline pressure to estimated few Torrs and its body temp rose ~30C on the outside.
So it was sweating and it may be back streamed.
The present RGA data is indicating that it had to be very mild.
The RGA will have better sensitivity with VM1 open and VM2 closed.
The PSL output shutter stayed open during these period is pointing to IFO pressure stayed P1 <3 mTorr
PROBLEM: P1 and P2 plot should show nothing where there is no communication.http://nodus.ligo.caltech.edu:8080/40m/151016_182003/oct16Fpm2015.png

Steve | Update | VAC | vacuum gauge check |
Convectron gauge check:
Brand new 10 years old convectron gauge at atm was swapped into the place of existing gauges to see if they read close to 760 Torrs
They did reasonable well at the low end. I tried to imitate calibration and bring down the high end with little success.
( P1 and P2 were reading 7e-4 to ~660 Torr The correction of the upper end pushed up the lower end too. I will correct this later
P3 and P4 high ends are way off )
The point is that they work. Convectron gauges will be replaced and calibrated at the next vent.
Interlocks were not triggered during this test. I was expected to close the PSL shutter when P1 was reading 760 Torr
This hide some problem or not understanding.
It was good to see CC1 and CC4 working at the moment
Somehow I succeded opening VM1 and closed VM2 = vacuum normal
I just hope it stays open overnight to get comparable RGA scan.

Steve | Update | General | water leak in east arm |
Quote: |
A Caltech maintenance staff dropped by at around noon today, and told me that he had seen a small puddle of water on the other side of the door along the Y-arm that is kept locked (about 10m from the end-table, on the south side of the arm). He suspected a leak in the lab. Koji and I went down to the said door and observed that there was indeed a small puddle of water accumulated there. There isn't any obvious source of a leak on our side of the door, although the walls tiles in the area suggest that there could be a leak in one of the pipes running through the wall/under the floor. In any case, the leak doesn't seem too dramatic, and we have decided to consult Steve as to what is to be done about this once he is back on Wednesday.
|
The leak was found inside the wall. Fortunately the plumbers were able to access it from CES room 108
