Fri May 27 12:15:30 2022, JC, Update, Electronics, CRT TV / Monitor 6
|
[Yehonathan, Paco, Yuta, JC]
As we were cleaning up this morning, we heard a high pitch sound that turned into a buzz. After searching for where the sound came from, we noticed
the CRT TV went out. We swapped this out with a moniter and used a BNC to VGA adapter to display the cameras. |
Tue May 31 14:44:02 2022, JC, Update, Electronics, CRT TV / Monitor 6

returned to turn on the computers. |
Fri May 27 17:46:48 2022, Paco, Summary, Computers, CDS upgrade visit, downfall and rise of c1lsc models
|
[Paco, Anchal-remote, Yuta, JC]
Sometime around noon today, right after cds upgrade planning tour, c1lsc FE fell. We though this was ok because anyways c1sus was still up, but
somehow the IFO alignment was compromised (this is in fact how we first noticed this loss). Yuta couldn't see REFL on the camera, and neither on the |
Mon May 16 14:46:35 2022, Tommy, Update, Electronics, RFSoC MTS Work
|
We followed the manual's guide for setting up MTS to sync on external signal. In the xrfdc package, we update the RFdc class to have RunMTS, SysRefEnable,
and SysRefDisable functions as prescribed on page 180 of the manual. Then, we attempted to run the new functions in the notebook and read the DAC signal
outputs on an oscilloscope. The DACs were not synced. We were also unable to get FIFOlatency readings. |
Fri May 27 15:53:17 2022, Tommy, Update, Electronics, RFSoC MTS Work
|
With some help from the forums, we printed the status of the DAC MTS sync and were able to determined that our board's vivado design does not have
MTS enabled on each tile. To fix this, we will need to construct a new Vivado desgin for the board. We were also warned to "make sure to generate
correctly a PL_clock and a PL_sysref with your on board clock synthesizers and to capture them in the logic according to the requirements in PG269" |
Thu May 26 15:55:10 2022, Tommy, Update, Electronics, RFSoC Power Spectrum
|
Finished building power spectrum analyzer for the RFSoC. There are two things that I would like to address down the road. First is that there is an oscillation
between positive and negative voltages at the ADC sampling frequency. This creates an undesirable frequency component at the sampling rate. I have not
yet figured out the cause of this positive to negative oscillation and have simply removed half of the samples in order to recover the frequency. Therefore, |
Tue May 3 21:05:23 2022, yuta, Update, BHD, AS path alignment, removing a lot of green stuff 7x
|
[Tega, Yehonathan, Koji, Yuta]
We tried to align AS path this afternoon. |
Wed May 4 13:09:42 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, IMC table balanced again, IMC is locking, YARM is locking
|
[Paco, JC, Anchal]
We balanced the IMC table back again to point that got us 50% of nominal transmission from IMC. Then we tweaked the steering mirror for injection
to IMC to get up to 90% of nominal transmission. Finally, we used WFS servo loop to get to the 100% nominal transmission from IMC. However, we found that |
Wed May 4 15:08:59 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, XARM alignment to get flashing
|
[Yuta, Tega]
We aligned the BS, ITMY, and ETMY PIT and YAW to get the flashing on X-arm whilst also keeping the flashing of Y-arm. From attachment 1, it is
clear that POXDC photodiode is not receiveing any light, so our next task is to work on POX alignment. |
Wed May 4 18:52:43 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, POP beam too high at POP SM4 on the ITMX chamber
|
[Yuta, Tega]
We needed to sort out the POXDC signal so we could work on X-arm alignment. Given that POXDC channel value was approx 6 compared to POYDC value
of approx. 180, we decided to open the ITMX chamber to see if we could improve the situation. We worked on the alignment of POX beam but could not improve |
Thu May 5 14:46:22 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, POP beam height lowered, POP_SM4 raised
|
[Anchal, JC]
We first aligned the single arm cavity resonance for both arms to get maximum flashing. As we opened the chamber, I found that the POP beam was
mostly hitting the POP_SM4 mirror but was clipping about 2 mm on the top edge. |
Thu May 5 17:05:31 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, IMC & X/Y-arm alignment
|
[Yuta, Tega]
In order to setup POP camera and RFPD on the ITMX table, we decided to first work on the IMC and X/Y-arm alignment.
|
Mon May 9 18:43:03 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, ITMX table layout corrected
|
As I went to correct the ITMX Oplev mirrors, I found that both mirrors were placed in very different positions than the design position. Part of the
reason I think was to preserve outside oplev path, and party because a counterweight was in ITMXOL1 position. I had to do following steps to correct this:
I noted down level meter readings of the table before making any changes.
I removed the counter weight from near the center |
Mon May 9 18:49:05 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, Relocate green TRX and TRY PDs/cams/optics from PSL table to BS table
|
[Paco, Tega]
Started work on the relocating the green transmission optics, cameras and PDs. Before removing the any of the optics, we checked and confirmed
that the PDs and Cams are indeed connected to the GRN TRX/Y medm channels. Then added labels to the cables before moving them. |
Tue May 10 15:46:38 2022, JC, Update, BHD, Relocate green TRX and TRY components from PSL table to BS table
|
[JC, Tega]
Tega and I cleaned up the BS OPLEV Table and took out a couple of mirrors and an extra PD. The PD which was removed is "IP-POS - X/Y Reversed".
In addition to this, the cable is zip-tied to the others located on the outside of the table in case this is required later on. |
Tue May 10 18:25:43 2022, Paco, Update, BHD, Green Transmission path
|
[Yuta, Paco]
We installed GRX_SM1, GRX_SM2, and finished aligning the GRY_SM1, and GRY_SM2
steering mirrors in the BS and IMC Chambers. GRY_SM1 was slightly misplaced (by ~ 2 inches), so we had to move it slightly. Luckily this |
Tue May 10 16:31:14 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, ITMX optlev return beam steered to QPD
|
Followed the steps below to complete the ITMX optlev installation. The ITMX optlev return beam now reaches its QPD without being blocked by the input
steering mirror.
Although, I centered the ITMX optlev readout, this was not done when the XARM flashing is maximized bcos the IMC chamber was being worked on, |
Fri May 6 13:48:34 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, WFS loop instability fixed
|
[Yuta, Anchal]
We investigated why WFS loop wasn't working. It seemed like WFS1 PIT error signal has a huge offset which would push the loop to misalign
all optics' PIT. So we did the following steps: |
Thu May 12 19:55:01 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, AS path alignment
|
[Yuta, Tega]
We finally managed to steer the AS beam from ITMY chamber, through BS and IMC chambers, to the in-air AP table.
We moved the AS5 mirror north to its nominal position and we also moved the ASL lens on BS chamber back to its nominal position. Attached photos |
Thu May 12 20:11:18 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, BHDBS Output beams steered out to ITMY table
|
I successfully steered out the two output beams from BHD BS to ITMY table today. This required significant changes on the table, but I was able to bring
back the table to balance coarsely and then recover YARM flashing with fine tuning of ITMY.
The counterweights were kept at the North end of the table which was in way of one of the output beams of BHD.
So I saved |
Thu May 12 20:24:29 2022, yuta, Update, BHD, POX and POY investigation
|
[Anchal, Yuta]
We checked POX and POY RF signal chains for sanity check since Xarm cannot be locked in IR stably as opposed to Yarm. |
Mon May 16 13:22:59 2022, yuta, Update, BHD, REFL and AS paths aligned at AP table
|
After Xarm and Yarm were aligned by Anchal et al, I aligned AS and REFL path in the AP table.

Mon May 16 19:14:17 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, Camera set on AS path and BHDBS output path
|
[Anchal, Paco, Yuta]
We aligned AS path avoiding any clipping to the AP table where we setup a camera with a lens.
To do this we had to move
AS6 in North direction for ~1cm.
The Injection table was imbalanced by this move to drop the IMC transmission to half.
We did not |
Tue May 17 18:43:38 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, Placed SRM in ITMY Chamber
|
[Anchal, Paco, Yuta]
SRM Placement
SRM was moved from its parked location to the nominal position in the ITMY chamber.
This
imbalanced the table a lot as all SOS towers ended up on the south side of the table.
I needed additionally three SOS tower side walls to recover |
Wed May 18 08:30:29 2022, Paco, Update, BHD, SRM OpLev
|
[Paco]
The SRM Oplev injection and detection paths interfere heavily with the POY11. Due to the limited optical access, I suggest we try steering POYM1
YAW and adapting the RFPD path accordingly. |
Thu May 19 08:51:40 2022, Paco, Update, BHD, SRM OpLev
|
[Paco, Ian]
After agreement from Yuta/Anchal, I moved POYM1 yaw to clear the aforementioned path, and Ian restored the POY11 RFPD path. The demodulation
phase might need to be corrected afterwards, before any lockign attempts. |
Wed May 18 09:02:52 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, WFS1 PD centered
|
I centered WFS1 PD so that IMC WFS Servo does not go out of range.
|
Wed May 18 17:23:15 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, Placed PRM in BS Chamber
|
[Anchal, Paco, Yuta, JC]
SRM Oplev setup
We setup SRM oplev path for the aligned position of SRM.
This was bit hard, because
the return beam was following almost the same path as the input beam, and the return beam had become about 1 cm in diameter.
We replaced one |

Thu May 19 19:05:59 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, BS Chamber all work finished, BHD path setup
|
[Anchal, Paco, Yuta]
BS Oplev Path
The changed position of PRM (40m/16863)
meant that BS oplev path is getting clipped by the PRM SOS tower.
We had to move BSOL ~ 16 cm North and ~ 1.7 cm East.
This means |
Fri May 20 20:03:48 2022, Paco, Update, BHD, ITMY chamber work finished - LO and AS overlapped
|
[Paco, Anchal, Yuta]

Tue May 24 15:21:13 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, Freeswing tests of new SOS started
|
I modified the script freeSwing.py to use damping loop output switches
to free the optic instead of watchdog or coil output filters. This ensures that the free swing test is being done at the nominal position of the optic.
I started tests for LO1, LO2, As2, As4, PR2, PR3, and SR2 in a tmux session names freeSwing on rossa. |
Fri May 20 12:42:23 2022, Tega, Update, VAC, Door installation on the end stations

Sat May 14 08:36:03 2022, Chris, Update, DAQ, DAQ troubleshooting
|
I heard a rumor about a DAQ problem at the 40m.
To investigate, I tried retrieving data from some channels under C1:SUS-AS1 on the c1sus2 front end. DQ channels worked fine, testpoint channels
did not. This pointed to an issue involving the communication with awgtpman. However, AWG excitations did work. So the issue seemed to be specific to the |

[Anchal, Paco, JC]
Thanks Chris for the fix. We are able to access the testpoints now but we started facing another issue this morning, not sure how it is related
to what you did. |
Mon May 16 12:59:27 2022, Chris, Update, DAQ, DAQ troubleshooting
|
It looks like the RFM problem started a little after 2am on Saturday morning (attachment 1). It’s subsequent to what I did, but during a time of
no apparent activity, either by me or others.

Mon Apr 18 16:09:07 2022, Yehonathan, Update, BHD, BHD Readout simulation
|
I'm planning on simulating the BHD readout noise in a manner very similar to the ALS noise model using Simulink. I've made a sketch of the model
for the longitudinal DOFs (attached). A model for ASC will be similar but with more measurement devices (OpLevs, QPDs, WFSs).
I'm not pretending to simulate everything in this diagram on the first go, it is just a sketch of the big picture. |
Tue May 3 21:07:17 2022, Yehonathan, Update, BHD, BHD Readout simulation
|
I feel like there is an instability in my thought process on this. Before my tendency to try to scale and generalize this problem brings me to a full
stop I will make small but quick progress.
First thing is to calculate the noise budget for a simple Michelson. The involved optics are: |

I've summarized the optomechanics configuration for the in-vacuum aux small optics
It's not obvious here but the post for POP_SM4 is the stack of BA2V, Newport 9953, PLS-T238, LMR1V. The mirror is a CM254-750-E03 curved
mirror. This should go on the suspension base. I hope I did not make a mistake there... |
Wed Feb 2 18:55:58 2022, Koji, Summary, BHD, Optomechanics configuration for the in-vacuum aux small optics

Here is more detail of the POP_SM4 mount assembly.
It's a combination of BA2V + PLS-T238 + BA1V + TR-1.5 + LMR1V + Mirror: CM254-750-E03
Between BA1V and PLS-T238, we have to do a washer action to fix the post (8-32) with a 1/4-20 slot. Maybe we can use a 1" post shim from thorlabs/newport. |

I investigated this issue today. At first, it seemed that only new suspension testpoints are inaccessible. I was able to use diaggui for a measurement
on MC2. The DAQ network cable between 1X4 and 1Y1 was tied and is very taught now (we should relieve this as soon as possible, best solution is to lay
down a longer cable over the bridge). My hypothesis is that the DAQ network might have broken while tying this cable and it probably did not come back |
Tue Apr 19 18:10:10 2022, Paco, Update, BHD, Part V of BHR upgrade - POX11 path, LO path, and ITMX Oplev
|
[Yuta, Paco]
We set up POX11 beam path from ITMX chamber to the ITMX in-air table. To do this, we first identified the POX reflection on the ITMX chamber,
and then steered the POXM1 (in the BSC) by hand until we cleared the viewport. We also checked that the POX beam is centered on POXM1. |
Wed Apr 20 08:20:22 2022, Paco, Update, BHD, Part V of BHR upgrade - PR2 weirdness
|
Yesterday, I tried tuning the PR2 damping gains by increasing the gain until the damping gave the ~5 oscillations (by watching the damped motion using
StripTool, and keeping an eye on the PD var). I noticed that often when I changed the gain, some OSEM sensors shifted (gained an offset!!) and the PD var
values changed, typically increasing at higher damping gains. I reverted the changes until the PD var looked "normal" again (~ 2 mV) but it is |

It seemed that it comes from the servo oscillation. This does not happen when the output limitters were set to be 100-ish. But even so the gains looked
quite low.
I turned on the Cheby rool-offs for all the DOFs, and this allowed me to increase the damping gain A LOT. |
Thu Apr 21 16:49:01 2022, Paco, Update, BHD, Part V of BHR upgrade - BS Oplev + LO1 offset
|
[Paco, JC, Yuta]
We aligned the BS oplev using the new BSOL mirror pair. The main change is now the AOI of the oplev on the BS is quite normal. The output beam
in the in-air table was quite large (diverging?) so we had to place a short FL lens in front of the QPD. |
Thu Apr 21 18:42:47 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, Part V of BHR upgrade - Align LO and AS beams to BHD BS
|
[Tega, Yuta, Paco]
We tried aligning the LO and AS beams on to the BHD beamsplitter. During the alignment process, we noticed that the damping loop for AS1 was
not working. Paco drew our attention to the fact that the UR OSEM signal was alway close to zero, so we checked to ensure that the magnet was still within |

I used the open light level output of 908 for ITMX side OSEM from 40m/16549 to roughly
calibrate cts2um filter module in LO1 OSEM input filters. All values were close to 0.033. As the calibration reduces the signal value by about 30 times,
I increased all damping gains by a factor of 30. None of loops went into any unstable oscillations and I witnessed damping of kicks to the optic. |

I noticed that our current suspension damping loops for the new SOS were railing the DAC outputs. The reason being that cts2um module has not been updated
for most optics and thus teh OSEM signal (with the new Sat Amps) is about 30 times stronger. That means our usual intuition of damping gains is too high
without applying correct conversion cts2um filter module. I reduced all these gains today and nothing is overflowing the c1su2 chassis now. I also added |

For some reasonf the free swing test showed only one resonance peak (see attachment 1). This probably happened because one of the earthquake stops is

at 3 am, one of the earthquake stops was touching the optic. We need to check this when we open the chamber next. |

I agree. That's an interesting idea. But does that mean that there is an always working inverse matrix solution or that any solution will be vulnerable

I think we can also calculate the matrix rotation required as a function of dc biases and do that rotation in the simulimk model. |

The main issue with SR2 OSEMs, now that I think of it, was that the BS table was very inclined due to the multiple things we removed (including counterweights).
Today the first I did was level the BS table by placing some counterweights in the correct positions. I placed the level in two directions right next to
SR2 (clamped in its planned place), and made the bubble center. |

The point of changing the gains was to return the system to its origional state. ie I wanted the over all gain of the physical components to be the same
as when we started. From the CDS side of things nothing else should be changed. The damping filters should remain at their origional values. The cts2um
filter was changed to counteract a change in the electronics (replacing them). These changes should cancel eachother out. As for the side control, on 3/4/22 |

|
[Anchal, Paco]
We installed a HV kepco power supply for the green PZT steering the YAUX beam. We did this in anticipation of the YARM alignment to take place
this afternoon. We borrowed an unused DC power supply labeled "OMC Power spply" and made an appropriate SMA connection (Attachment #1), |

[Paco, Ian]
First, we re-balanced the ITMX OSEMs so that they would damp at around half-a-shadow.
Then, we set up a clean camera inside ITMX chamber looking at the ITMX optic. Then, using the live feed we aligned the AUX beam from |

Continuing with the previous alignment that we stoped on friday, we re set up my heavily cleaned iPhone on FaceTime. The Phone alowed us to see
the laser on the ITMX and center it on that optic. |

|
I have received the new screwdriver bits that will work with the two electric screwdrivers we have. I have distributed them in the 40m. Some are in the
electronics stations and some are in the toolbox in the lab. The new electric screwdriver (which looks like a drill but takes typical screwdriver bits)
is in the room with the workshop. It is in the blue Makita box. For some reason, lots of the old bits were rounded because of incorrect use. I have thrown |

[Paco]
This morning I assembled LO3, LO4 and AS3 (all mirrors) onto polaris K1 mounts. The mounts stand as per this
elog, on 4.5" posts with 0.5" Al spacers to match the beam heigth of 5.5". I also assembled ASL by adding a 0.14" |

This morning Chub and I leak checked the manual gate valve with the RGA and helium. There was no change in the helium partial pressure while spraying
helium around the flanges, all looks good.

Jordan, Chub, Paco
Chub and I went into the lab this morning to leak check the new gate valve after pumping over the weekend. This would be done through the RGA
and spraying helium around the newly installed flanges. The RGA is set to monitor the partial pressure of helium versus time and we visually watch for |
