steve | Update | PSL | almost 4 yrs plot of power & temps |
The water chiller is normally running 1.5 C warmer than the laser head temp.
When control room temp is stable and PEM-count_temp is stable we can expect the head temp to be stable 20.0 C
PSL-126MOPA_HTEMP is running warmer in the last ~40 days
The ifo arm thermostate temp settings were raised by 2 F on 8-11-08 |

steve | Summary | oplevs | optical levers |
The idea is to push the UGF to 10 Hz of the TM oplev servos with quiet HeNe laser.
We measured good intensity noise of JDS 1103P in May 2007 and converted most of the TM oplevs to it.
The ITMs still have the noisy 670nm , 1 mW, diode lasers to begin with.
In order to get 1 mW power returning to the qpds I measured the power going to TMs
and returning on qpds ...so we can select the appropriate laser power for the conversion.
40m optical lever lasers:
HeNe laser JDS 1103P, 633nm, linear polarization 500:1,
ETMX: qpd 0.12 mw (4%) reflected of 3 mW,
ETMY: qpd 0.1o (3.8%) " 2.6
BS: qpd 0.02 ( 2.5%) " 0.8
PRM: qpd 0.01 (1.3%) " 0.75
SRM: qpd 0.08 (10%) " 0.8
Coherent 670 nm Diode Lasers VLM-tm, 0.95 mW, linear polarization 100:1,
ITMX: qpd 0.1 mW (11%) reflected back from TM of 0.9 mW
ITMY: qpd 0.04 (7%) " " 0.6
It seems that JDS HeNe laser 633 nm, linear polarization 500:1, 10 mW will do the job |

Monday morning conditions:
The laser head temp is up to 20.5 C
The laser shut down on Friday without any good reason.
I was expecting the temp to come down slowly. It did not.
The control room temp is 73-74 F, Matt Evans air deflector in perfect position.
The laser chiller temp is 22.2 C
ISS is saturating. Alarm is on. Turning gain down from 7 to 2 pleases alarm handler.

The ITM oplevs laser diodes are noisy.
They will be replaced by JDS 1035P
SN T8093307 was measured with the beamscanner.
This will able us to calculate the right lenses to get a small beam on the qpd.
** The first column is distance from the front face of the laser in cm.
The second column is beam diameter in the horizontal direction in microns.
The third column is the beam diameter in the vertical direction in microns. (edit by Rana) |

steve | Update | PEM | thump noise from particle counter |
The particle counter is back on the IOOC location on a piece of FOAM
It needs this isolation, so when the pump is running, it's not shaking things.
The counter was counting for 6 sec and it was on holding for 20 mins.
Now I set the counter for 20 sec so it is easy to recognise it's signal and it holds for 2min only.
This will set the alarm handler in action.
Atm1: 40 mins plot
PEM-ACC_MC2_x,y,z up to 13 mins: pcounter at MC2 table, clamped, counting for 20s and holds for 2 mins
PEM-ACC_MC2_x,y,z from 13 to 26 mins: pcounter at MC2 table, not clamped, seated on 2" foam, counting 20s and holds for 2 mins
PEM-ACC_MC1_x,y,z from 26 to 40 mins: pcounter at MC1_IOOC location, not clamped, seated on 2" foam, counting 20s and holds for 2 mins
Rana won the bet
Quote: | I'll bet Steve a dollar that it is mechanical. The attached PDF compares all of the accelerometers from right now.
You can see that the RMS in MC2 is way bigger than MC1.
In the second PDF file you can see the time series. I had to play around a lot with DTT to get it to work. The DTT/Foton
combo on Allegra is not stable, so make sure your work early and often.
In the plots shown, I am bandpassing the time series from 600-700 Hz. I found that doing so allowed the burp in MC1 to remain
large and reduce the extraneous fuzz in MC2. As you can see there is no such noise in MC2.
So its a noise around 600-700 Hz that comes on quickly and then shuts off after several seconds. Its also very periodic in that
it comes on around every 20 minutes. Steve also tells me (although he refuses to put in the elog) that it started up around
August 20th (?). I feel like someone in the 40m lab ought to be able to guess what this is at this point.
Please convince Steve to elog his findings about when the noise started.
If one goes out there and stands next to it when the trend predicts its happening it becomes clear what it is. |

steve | Update | VAC | tp3 forline pump replaced |
Alberto took 40m vacuum 101 class as we replaced the drypump at the annulus pump line.
He is still not authorized to use the monster 2 3/8" open end wrench that is 36" long.
The fore line pressure dropped to 20 mTorr from 1 Torr as the pumps were swapped.
Bob needs to be given credit for replacing the tip seal on this Varian SH-100 drypump
The ss-hose felt dry at the tp3 exhaust end but it was some what "teflon coated-placticky-
-almost oily" at intake end of the dry pump.
We'll have to replace this metal hose next time.
This is a reminder that the 40m vacuum operation is fully manual.
It requires two people to switch a vacuum valve and one of them has to be experienced. |

steve | HowTo | VAC | N2 supply pressure lowered for vac valves |
Quote: | I've been replacing the N2 bottles recently.
I noticed that the consumption is too high. I had to replace them every two days.
Normally the interval is three or more days.
I suspect there is some leak in the line.
Strangely, it is always the left hand bottle which goes empty. The right hand bottle has been
there for more than a week at about 1000 psi.
We should check it when Steve is back. |
All vac valves operated by N2
The two cylinders are located in entry room 103
There is an auto switch over valve between them to insure continuous supply.
The pressure regulator should be set 70 PSI on the gauge
This pressure we keep constant.
All vac valves will close in case of running out of N2 or losing ac power so
it is essential that one replaces empty N2 cylinder.
Simply disconnect large CGA580 fitting with a crescent wrench.
Swap in full cylinder from outside, reconnect fitting tightly and open cylinder valve.
Now you should be reading the full cylinder pressure.
Write each cylinder pressure and date-time on the board so one can see if there is a leak |
