The smell of diesel is particularly bad this morning. Its concentrated enough to be causing me a headache. I'm heading off to Millikan and will be working remotely on Megatron.
Instead of doing RCG stuff, I went to Millikan to work on data analysis as I couldn't stand the fumes from the construction. (this morning, 8am)
The 40m produces a large amount of paper and cardboard waste. It would be worth it if we disposed those kind of garbages for recycling.
I set up two new garbage bins in the lab: one in the control rooms that adds up to the can/bottle recycling bin, and one other one in the office area, next to the printer for general paper disposal.
People in the lab are strongly invited to make use of the two new garbage bins and recycle their paper and cardboard waste.
Boxes can be larger than the garbage bin, so I'd recommend people to crash them before throwing them into the bin.
Diesel fumes are pumped away from control room AC intakes with the help of newly installed reflector boxes on the CES wall fans.........see # 2272
I made a short stop at the 40m on Sunday night and found that hundreds ants are in the coffee maker.
I removed ants around the sink and washed the coffee maker.
It looked the ants were everywhere in the lab tonight. They seemed to prefer warm places like in the coffee maker and below the coffee mill.
So, I recommend that Steve should confirm there is no ants in the coffee maker again before the first coffee of the week is made.
Othewise they will add some more acidity to your cup.
We still had some ants visiting the sink area this morning. These ants seem to be addicted to our our Peet's coffe

we hung two new WALL cable racks. One is on the pillar next to the Sp table, the other is next to the PSL computer rack.
To do that we had to drill holes in the wall since the simple screws weren't strong enough to keep them up.
One of the racks, the yellow, is dedicated to 4-pin lemos and other thick cables.
awesome - I have ordered 5 blue racks so that we can hang power cables. The fat BLUE ones are for fat cables and the orange ones for the coax cables.
In the lab there are lots of old posters with outdated autocad drawings, or printouts with schematics of old electronics hanging on the walls.
Can we get rid of those and start giving the lab a fresh and modern look?
Rana noticed that recently the temperature inside the lab has been a little bit too high. That might be causing some 'unease' to the computers with the result of making them crash more often.
For the next hours I'll be paying attention to the temperature inside the lab to make sure that it doesn't go out of control and that the environment gets too cold.
Today the lab is perceptibly cooler.
The temperature around the corner is 73 F.
It has rained continuously for the last 24 hours. Bob walked through the lab looking for possible water infiltrations. The floor looked dry: no puddles or leaks anywhere so far.
There is a planned power outage tomorrow, Saturday from 7am till midnight.
I vented all annulies and switched to ALL OFF configuration. The small region of the RGA is still under vacuum.
The vac-rack: gauges, c1vac1 and UPS turned off.

In the process of finding the signal of the big chilean earthquake I just realized that we were all off
MC1 and MC3 seem to have kept themselves together, but all the other optics' watchdogs tripped.
Some of the suspensions got watchdog tripped -> enabled -> damped.
The MC mirrors got slightly misaligned.

The RFM network failed today. We had to reboot the frame builder anf restart all the front end following the instructions for the "Nuclear Option".
Burt-restoring to May 1st at 18:07, or April 30 18:07 made c1sosvme crash. We had to reset the front ends again and restore to April 15th at 18:07 in order to make everything work.
Everything seems fine again now.
... not just because we haven't locked the interferometer for quite some time. I mean, it literally stinks. The chiller's chiller is molding. Its' dripping water and there's mold all under it (Jo just confirmed: "yeah, it's mold").
Someone from Caltech maintenance just crossed the door. Hopefully he'll help us fix it.

Someone has been moving the big blue recycling bin in front of the laser-chiller-chiller (the air conditioner in the control room). This is unacceptable. The chiller temp was up to 20.76C. No good.
You are free to move the recycling bin around so you can access drawers or the bike-exit-door in the control room, but make sure that it does not block air flow between the chiller-chiller and the chiller.

We're going to have to reinstate the policy of No food / organic trash *anywhere* in the 40m. Everyone has been pretty good, keeping the food trash to the one can right next to the sink, but that is no longer sufficient, since we've been invaded by an army of ants:
We are going back to the old policy of Take your trash out to the dumpsters outside. I'm sure there are some old wives tales about how exercise after eating helps your digestion, or something like that, so no more laziness allowed!

A guy from the carpenter shop has done the drilling work in the morning.
In the afternoon we wrapped the central part of the interferometer with plastic sheets in order to avoid the dusts from the tile ripping that will happen tomorrow.
I powered down 1Y1 and 1Y2 instrument racks of MC and RF-systems this morning.
Both racks, SP table, clean tools-parts boxes and MC2 area are also covered with plastics.

Tiles and adhesive removed. There were no dust storms created. Solvent paint- removal made the hole IFO -lab smell like the paint shop.
The south door is open with a fan blowing air inside. The north-west door is open through control room to outside to let air rinse the drying
paint-removal. Koji is taking lunch break while test riding our new PSL table legs.
Since the laser is off, Jenne and I rasied the chiller-chiller (small AC in the Control Room) set point temperature to 73 degree F (from 68F) to save people from shivering.
WE programmed the MOPA chiller's AC unit to turn off at 6PM each day and automatically turn on at 7 AM each morning. Its now very quiet in the control room at night.
Next, we'll leave it off during the day and see if it makes Steve go crazy or not.
I changed the setpoint for the HVAC control (next to Steve) from 73F to 72F. This is to handle the temperature increase in the control room with the AC unit there turned off.
We know that the control setpoint is not linear, but I hope that it settles down after several hours. Lets wait until Tuesday evening before making another change.
80 degrees is too uncomfortable in the control room so I turned on the AC. The set point is 74F.

Please get up off your (Alignment Stabilization Servo)es and recycle your bottles and cans! There is a recycling bin in the control room. Recent weeks have seen an increase in number of bottles/cans thrown away in the regular garbage. This is not cool.
There were small pieces of glass, remnants of a fluorescent tube, which were lying around on the ETMY end table for a while now. We picked up the larger pieces by hand and used the HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner to pick up the remaining glass and dust on the table.

Mess in the lab is increasing. Kiwamu and I had to clean up some stuffs to continue our work.

you have used for the day should be cleaned up at the end of the day.
If one likes to leave a temporary stuff, leave a note to indicate by whom, for what, how long
it will be kept like that, and when one is going to back there with contact info like the cell phone #.
The Kinemetrics dudes are going to visit us @ 1:45 tomorrow (Wednesday) to check out our stacks, seismos, etc.

Again while poking around inside the IFO room, I noticed that they have replaced all of our incandescent lights with CFLs. Do we care? The point of having the incandescent lights on a separate switch from the big fluorescent lights was so that we could have only 60Hz lines, not wide-band noise if we want the lights on while locking.
I'm not sure that we actually care, because more often we just turn off all the lights while trying to do serious locking, but if we do care, then someone needs to ask the custodial staff (or someone else?) to undo the change.
I turned it back on, maybe around 11am? Definitely a little while before the 12:30 meeting.

I've changed R2 resistor in the seism box for the VERT 1 channel from 464 Ohm to 1051 Ohm to reduce the gain of this channel by a factor of 2. This should help the GUR1Z signal not to be corrupted inside the AA box, so we can use it in the adaptive filtering.
I tried to figure out why offline LMS filter subtract seismic noise much better from MC_F then the Wiener filter. I did the calculations twice - with my codes and with Matlab in-build functions, the results are the same. So this is not a code error.
The coherence between GUR 1, 2 and MC_F is still poor. Wiener filter is linear and its performance is confined to the frequency ranges where we see coherence. Lms filter is non-linear and it may be possible to subtract the noise even if non-linear effects are present in the system.
I've checked seismometer readout box again. I've soldered 50 Ohms to plus and minus inputs to VERT 1,2 N/S 1,2, E/W 1,2 - GUR 1 and 2 use these channels. Then I put the box back and connected it to the ADC.
The plot shows that the readout box noise is below the ADC noise. It is possible that amplifiers introduce non-linear effects. To check this I plotted the coherence between OSEM sensors and GUR1X signal:
The coherence between OSEM sensors and GUR1X is pretty good, so may be witness path is not responsible for low coherence at 0.1 - 0.5 Hz between MC_F and GUR 1,2. IT seems that MC_F is bad at low frequencies. I terminated the input to the Channel 1 of the Pentek Generic board, where MC_F is plugged in.
ADC is also good. Something else is wrong.
I don't know why, but they're looking around on the roof, and inside our ceiling above the bathrooms.
Bob tells me that the carpenter is going to move the nitrogen bottles to the other side of the outside door, so that the plumbers can install a safety shower / eyewash right outside our door.
Also, the carpenter just mounted a new glass door cabinet from Bob's lab in the IFO room, so we have some new storage space.
Mode Cleaner doesn't want to stay locked. Seismic is coming down from an earthquake ~20min ago.
We're in the process of measuring IPPOS, so this is obnoxious.

We're following the tried and true tradition of going home when there's an earthquake big enough that the MC won't stay locked.
Several optics have rung up, PRM is the only one which has tripped so far, because the side sensor has the extra gain, but the watchdog threshold is set for the face OSEMs.
There is an intermittent rattling sound coming from the HEPA in the NE corner of the PSL table (right above the PMC, all of our input optics).
Steve says it might be a bad bearing, but he'll check it out in the morning and get it fixed.
MC was having a hard time staying locked, with no discernable reason from the control room (i.e. no big seismic, no PMC PZT railing). The HEPA was on 100%, so I turned it down to 50% to hopefully reduce the rattling, if that was what was wrong.
I assume it's the rock tumbler, although it could be something else, but the MC has had trouble staying locked yesterday and today (yesterday Yaakov and I went over there and they were doing stuff almost constantly - it's super loud over there), and today even the PMC has fallen out of lock twice. I just relocked it again, since it went out of lock just after Journal club started.
Anyhow, I think this will be good data for Masha, and then also for the Masha+Yaakov triangulation project.

All optics except MC2 and ETMX are crazy

A bunch of surfs in the lab just noticed that ETMX is going crazy (laser is shifting everywhere) due to a 4.5 EQ that just hit LA. The optic is already shut down according to the watchdogs.
