Tue May 3 21:05:23 2022, yuta, Update, BHD, AS path alignment, removing a lot of green stuff 7x
|
[Tega, Yehonathan, Koji, Yuta]
We tried to align AS path this afternoon. |
Wed May 4 13:09:42 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, IMC table balanced again, IMC is locking, YARM is locking
|
[Paco, JC, Anchal]
We balanced the IMC table back again to point that got us 50% of nominal transmission from IMC. Then we tweaked the steering mirror for injection
to IMC to get up to 90% of nominal transmission. Finally, we used WFS servo loop to get to the 100% nominal transmission from IMC. However, we found that |
Wed May 4 15:08:59 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, XARM alignment to get flashing
|
[Yuta, Tega]
We aligned the BS, ITMY, and ETMY PIT and YAW to get the flashing on X-arm whilst also keeping the flashing of Y-arm. From attachment 1, it is
clear that POXDC photodiode is not receiveing any light, so our next task is to work on POX alignment. |
Wed May 4 18:52:43 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, POP beam too high at POP SM4 on the ITMX chamber
|
[Yuta, Tega]
We needed to sort out the POXDC signal so we could work on X-arm alignment. Given that POXDC channel value was approx 6 compared to POYDC value
of approx. 180, we decided to open the ITMX chamber to see if we could improve the situation. We worked on the alignment of POX beam but could not improve |
Thu May 5 14:46:22 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, POP beam height lowered, POP_SM4 raised
|
[Anchal, JC]
We first aligned the single arm cavity resonance for both arms to get maximum flashing. As we opened the chamber, I found that the POP beam was
mostly hitting the POP_SM4 mirror but was clipping about 2 mm on the top edge. |
Thu May 5 17:05:31 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, IMC & X/Y-arm alignment
|
[Yuta, Tega]
In order to setup POP camera and RFPD on the ITMX table, we decided to first work on the IMC and X/Y-arm alignment.
|
Mon May 9 18:43:03 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, ITMX table layout corrected
|
As I went to correct the ITMX Oplev mirrors, I found that both mirrors were placed in very different positions than the design position. Part of the
reason I think was to preserve outside oplev path, and party because a counterweight was in ITMXOL1 position. I had to do following steps to correct this:
I noted down level meter readings of the table before making any changes.
I removed the counter weight from near the center |
Mon May 9 18:49:05 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, Relocate green TRX and TRY PDs/cams/optics from PSL table to BS table
|
[Paco, Tega]
Started work on the relocating the green transmission optics, cameras and PDs. Before removing the any of the optics, we checked and confirmed
that the PDs and Cams are indeed connected to the GRN TRX/Y medm channels. Then added labels to the cables before moving them. |
Tue May 10 15:46:38 2022, JC, Update, BHD, Relocate green TRX and TRY components from PSL table to BS table
|
[JC, Tega]
Tega and I cleaned up the BS OPLEV Table and took out a couple of mirrors and an extra PD. The PD which was removed is "IP-POS - X/Y Reversed".
In addition to this, the cable is zip-tied to the others located on the outside of the table in case this is required later on. |
Tue May 10 18:25:43 2022, Paco, Update, BHD, Green Transmission path
|
[Yuta, Paco]
We installed GRX_SM1, GRX_SM2, and finished aligning the GRY_SM1, and GRY_SM2
steering mirrors in the BS and IMC Chambers. GRY_SM1 was slightly misplaced (by ~ 2 inches), so we had to move it slightly. Luckily this |
Tue May 10 16:31:14 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, ITMX optlev return beam steered to QPD
|
Followed the steps below to complete the ITMX optlev installation. The ITMX optlev return beam now reaches its QPD without being blocked by the input
steering mirror.
Although, I centered the ITMX optlev readout, this was not done when the XARM flashing is maximized bcos the IMC chamber was being worked on, |
Fri May 6 13:48:34 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, WFS loop instability fixed
|
[Yuta, Anchal]
We investigated why WFS loop wasn't working. It seemed like WFS1 PIT error signal has a huge offset which would push the loop to misalign
all optics' PIT. So we did the following steps: |
Thu May 12 19:55:01 2022, Tega, Update, BHD, AS path alignment
|
[Yuta, Tega]
We finally managed to steer the AS beam from ITMY chamber, through BS and IMC chambers, to the in-air AP table.
We moved the AS5 mirror north to its nominal position and we also moved the ASL lens on BS chamber back to its nominal position. Attached photos |
Thu May 12 20:11:18 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, BHDBS Output beams steered out to ITMY table
|
I successfully steered out the two output beams from BHD BS to ITMY table today. This required significant changes on the table, but I was able to bring
back the table to balance coarsely and then recover YARM flashing with fine tuning of ITMY.
The counterweights were kept at the North end of the table which was in way of one of the output beams of BHD.
So I saved |
Thu May 12 20:24:29 2022, yuta, Update, BHD, POX and POY investigation

Mon May 16 19:14:17 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, Camera set on AS path and BHDBS output path
|
[Anchal, Paco, Yuta]
We aligned AS path avoiding any clipping to the AP table where we setup a camera with a lens.
To do this we had to move
AS6 in North direction for ~1cm.
The Injection table was imbalanced by this move to drop the IMC transmission to half.
We did not |
Tue May 17 18:43:38 2022, Anchal, Update, BHD, Placed SRM in ITMY Chamber
|
[Anchal, Paco, Yuta]
SRM Placement
SRM was moved from its parked location to the nominal position in the ITMY chamber.
This
imbalanced the table a lot as all SOS towers ended up on the south side of the table.
I needed additionally three SOS tower side walls to recover |

I was finally able to set up a stable suspension model with the help of Yuta and I'm now ready to start doing some MICH noise budgeting with
BHD readout. (Tip: turns out that in the zpk function in Matlab you should multiply the poles and zeros by -2*pi to match the zpk TFs in Foton)

Mon May 16 14:46:35 2022, Tommy, Update, Electronics, RFSoC MTS Work
|
We followed the manual's guide for setting up MTS to sync on external signal. In the xrfdc package, we update the RFdc class to have RunMTS, SysRefEnable,
and SysRefDisable functions as prescribed on page 180 of the manual. Then, we attempted to run the new functions in the notebook and read the DAC signal
outputs on an oscilloscope. The DACs were not synced. We were also unable to get FIFOlatency readings. |
Sat May 14 08:36:03 2022, Chris, Update, DAQ, DAQ troubleshooting
|
I heard a rumor about a DAQ problem at the 40m.
To investigate, I tried retrieving data from some channels under C1:SUS-AS1 on the c1sus2 front end. DQ channels worked fine, testpoint channels
did not. This pointed to an issue involving the communication with awgtpman. However, AWG excitations did work. So the issue seemed to be specific to the |

Fri May 13 14:26:00 2022, JC, Update, Alignment, LO2 Beam
|
[Yehonathan, JC]
Yehonathan and I attempted to align the LO2 beam today through the BS chamber and ITMX Chamber. We found the LO2 beam was blocked by the POKM1

Now that we have a model of how the SS and IIR filters work we can get to the problem of how to measure the quantization noise in each of the systems. Den

with different numbers of bits. He had one filter with many more bits than the second one. He fed the same input signal to both filters then recorded their |

First and foremost I have the updated bode plot with the mode moved to 10 Hz. See Attachment 1. Note that the comparison measurement is a % difference
whereas in the previous bode plot it was just the difference. I also wrapped the phase so that jumps from -180 to 180 are moved down. This eliminates massive
jumps in the % difference. |

Wed Apr 20 08:20:22 2022, Paco, Update, BHD, Part V of BHR upgrade - PR2 weirdness
|
Yesterday, I tried tuning the PR2 damping gains by increasing the gain until the damping gave the ~5 oscillations (by watching the damped motion using
StripTool, and keeping an eye on the PD var). I noticed that often when I changed the gain, some OSEM sensors shifted (gained an offset!!) and the PD var
values changed, typically increasing at higher damping gains. I reverted the changes until the PD var looked "normal" again (~ 2 mV) but it is |

It seemed that it comes from the servo oscillation. This does not happen when the output limitters were set to be 100-ish. But even so the gains looked
quite low.
I turned on the Cheby rool-offs for all the DOFs, and this allowed me to increase the damping gain A LOT. |

[Paco, JC, Yuta]
We aligned the BS oplev using the new BSOL mirror pair. The main change is now the AOI of the oplev on the BS is quite normal. The output beam
in the in-air table was quite large (diverging?) so we had to place a short FL lens in front of the QPD. |

The magnets on the mirror face are arranged in a manner that the overall magnetic dipole moment is nullified faraway. Because of this, the coil

I noticed that our current suspension damping loops for the new SOS were railing the DAC outputs. The reason being that cts2um module has not been updated
for most optics and thus teh OSEM signal (with the new Sat Amps) is about 30 times stronger. That means our usual intuition of damping gains is too high
without applying correct conversion cts2um filter module. I reduced all these gains today and nothing is overflowing the c1su2 chassis now. I also added |

For some reasonf the free swing test showed only one resonance peak (see attachment 1). This probably happened because one of the earthquake stops is

I agree. That's an interesting idea. But does that mean that there is an always working inverse matrix solution or that any solution will be vulnerable

I think we can also calculate the matrix rotation required as a function of dc biases and do that rotation in the simulimk model. |

It was indeed the issue of the top OSEM plate not being in the right place horizontally. But the issue was more non-trivial. I believe because of the
wedge in thick optics, there is a YAW offset in the optic in the free hanging position. I had to readjust the OSEM plate 4 times to be able to get full

The main issue with SR2 OSEMs, now that I think of it, was that the BS table was very inclined due to the multiple things we removed (including counterweights).
Today the first I did was level the BS table by placing some counterweights in the correct positions. I placed the level in two directions right next to

to the acromag chassis just installed and from there they go to the binary inputs of the coil drivers together with the acromag controlled coil outputs. |

- BHD beams were already mixed in the chamber. So we don't need a BS on the table. (Probably there is no BS already)
- We don't need to split each BHD beam. One PD per BHD beam is OK for now.

every 1000 m^2 so one for every 30m x 30m space. We should have the particle counter reasonably close to the open chamber and all the manufactures that
I read about suggest a little more than 1 every 30x30m. We will have it much closer than this so it is nice to know that it should still get a good reading. |

The point of changing the gains was to return the system to its origional state. ie I wanted the over all gain of the physical components to be the same
as when we started. From the CDS side of things nothing else should be changed. The damping filters should remain at their origional values. The cts2um
filter was changed to counteract a change in the electronics (replacing them). These changes should cancel eachother out. As for the side control, on 3/4/22 |

Yehonathan told me that the wires are touching between the clamps! I went back to the CAD and confirmed
it is really happening. Sad.
The distance of the wires at the upper clamp is 17.018mm. |

Late update. We got 2 modified side blocks from Jordan a few days ago. Yesterday, I glued a side magnet to one of the modified side blocks.
I took the opportunity to reglue some magnets that were knocked off from the adapters. I did this for 2 adapters only since w need 4 shallow
adapters and we already had 2 complete ones. |

We glued some magnets onto modified side blocks. We followed pretty much the same procedure form last time. The music wires were clamped on the
side blocks away from the optic adapter. The clamps were screwed down using the low profile screws the Jordan obtained from UC components to allow maximum |

I installed OSEMs on the LO1 SOS. To my surprise, the side magnet is not in the center of the side OSEM. It completely misses the LED as can be seen
in the attachment.
Looking at the CAD model, it turns out the position of the OSEM on the left side plate is different from the position of the OSEM on the right |

Today I glued magnets onto the new 3/4" mirror adapters. I also took the opportunity to make some more side magnets assemblies.
Yesterday I mounted PR3/SR2 3/4" thick mirror onto one of the new adapter. There seem to be no issues for now.
I started the process of suspending AS1 (E2000226-A). The Lambda Optic mirror with the closest |

I threaded a new wire through a different side block with a magnet and clamped it under a microscope. It was hard, but eventually, I was able to do it
by holding the wire on both sides of the side block with weights.
The dented wire was discarded and the side block that was mounted on the AS1 adapter was put aside. I mounted the side block with the new wire |

We @40m do the convention of the arrow at the thinnest side & pointing the HR side, but nobody says Lambda does the same.
We can just remount the mirror without breaking the wires and adjust the pitching if you do it carefully.
Does this mean that the LO1 also likely to have the wedge pointing up? Or did you rotate the mirror to have the wedge reflection to be as horizontal |
Fri Dec 17 22:16:07 2021, Yehonathan, Update, BHD, SOS assembly

I specifically checked the specification before mounting the mirror. It says clearly "Arrow at
the thinnest location pointing towards Side 1". I guess they just ignored it.
As for LO1, I mounted it without noticing the location of the arrow. Later, I checked and the ghost beam was horizontal so I left it as it is. |

Sad... We just need to check the wedge direction everytime, unfortunately.
Pencil: can you try to gently wipe it off with solvent & a swab? (IPA / Acetone)
If it does not come off in the end, it's all right to leave. Do we want to scribe the arrow mark? You need a diamond pen. |

LO1: No need to remove the pencil mark for the damping test. Until we see serious contamination on the LO1 optic, we don't need
to take the optic off from the mount and clean it. If there is a chance of rehanging (because of a broken wire/etc), we do wipe the pencil mark.
Other optics: wipe the pencil mark as much as possible. |

We continue suspending PR3 today. Yehonathan and Paco suspended the thick optic in its adapter. After fixing some nominal height and undoing
any residual roll angle (see Attachments 1,2 for pictures), we noticed a problem with the pitch angle, so we insert the counterweights all the way in. |

Yes,
For the thin optics adapter design, we want Peek 1/4-20 screw (part # 98885A131) to replace the lower back long EQ stop. On it, we will have
a Peek washer (part # 93785A600) fastened between two Peek nuts (part #98886A813). |

I was wondering whether I should take AS1 down to redo the wire clamping on the side blocks. I decided to take the OpLev spectrum again to be more certain.
Attachments 1,2,3 show 3 spectra taken at different times.
They all show the same peaks 744mHz, 810mHz, 1Hz. So I think something went wrong with yesterday's measurement. I will not take AS1 down |

I picked up the PR2 mirrors (labeled M1, M2) from Anchel's table and took them to the cleanroom. By inspection, I spotted some dust particles on
M1. I wasn't able to remove them with clean air so I decided to use M2 which looked much cleaner. I wasn't able to discern any wedge angle on the
optic. I inserted the optic into a thin optic adapter. The optic is thicker than I expected so I use long screws for the mirror clamping. I expect that |

PR2's side magnet height was adjusted and its roll was balanced (attachment 1,2). I verified that the OpLev beam is still aligned. The pitch was
balanced: First, using an iris for rough adjustment. Then, with the QPD. I locked the counterweight setscrew.
I turned off the HEPAs, damped PR2, and measured the QPD spectra (attachment 3). Major peaks are at 690mHz, 953mHz, and 1.05Hz. I screwed back |

Yesterday, I rebuilt the OpLev setup in the cleanroom in order to suspend AS1. It took me a while to find all the necessary parts but I found them in
the end.
The HeNe laser was placed on the optical table and turned on. The beam was aimed to bounce off a folding mirror to the SOS tower. |

Not sure if that small difference can cause the alignment inability. Particularly, the removed metal was just below the wire. This means that there is
no misalignment effect at the first order.
